How to Find Your Baby’s Heartbeat with a Fetal Doppler (Guide)
A fetal doppler is a small handheld device used to listen to a baby’s heartbeat during pregnancy.
A fetal doppler is used to listen to the baby’s heartbeat during pregnancy. Some fetal dopplers also display the baby’s heart rate in BPM (beats per minute).

Step 1: Get Comfortable
Lie down on your back or choose a slightly reclined position.
This helps you relax and may make it easier to find a clear heartbeat sound. Try to stay calm and avoid pressing too hard on your abdomen.
Step 2: Apply Ultrasound Gel
Apply a generous amount of ultrasound gel to your lower abdomen.
The gel helps the doppler glide smoothly on the skin and improves sound transmission. For best results, do not use the doppler on dry skin.
Step 3: Start Low on the Abdomen
If you are in the early weeks of pregnancy, especially before 14 weeks, start just above the pubic bone.
At this stage, the baby is usually positioned lower in the pelvis, so searching too high on the belly can make the heartbeat harder to find.
Step 4: Move Slowly
Move the doppler probe slowly in small movements.
Take your time and pause for a few seconds in each spot before moving again. Slow movements give the doppler a better chance to detect a clear and steady sound.
Step 5: Adjust the Angle
Sometimes the heartbeat is found by gently changing the angle of the probe, not by moving it far across the belly.
Keep the probe in contact with the gel and slowly tilt it left, right, up, and down until you hear a clearer sound.
Step 6: Listen for the Baby’s Heartbeat
The baby’s heartbeat is usually faster than the mother’s heartbeat and often sounds like a soft, steady galloping rhythm.
A fetal heartbeat is commonly around 110–160 beats per minute, but this can vary. If you are ever unsure or concerned, always contact your doctor or midwife.
You may also hear your own heartbeat, which is usually slower, or a soft whooshing sound from the placenta.
